Clinical supervision is one of those things every occupational therapist knows they should be doing — but sometimes it can feel like a tick-box exercise to meet registration requirements.
In reality, supervision can (and should) be so much more than that. Done well, it’s not just about compliance — it’s about support, growth, and building longevity in your career.
What is Clinical Supervision?
At its core, supervision is a dedicated time to reflect on practice with another OT. It’s a space to:
- Step back from the busy pace of sessions and admin
- Process clinical and emotional challenges
- Get perspective on tricky cases or workplace dynamics
- Explore career direction and professional identity
- Keep yourself accountable to best practice and professional standards
It’s not about being “checked up on” or “being told what to do” — it’s about creating space to grow and helping you problem-solve, reflect and build upon your professional toolkit.
Why Supervision Matters for Every OT
-
New Grads: Supervision helps build confidence, consolidate learning, and ease the transition into professional practice.
-
Mid-Career OTs: It supports you to refine skills, explore specialisation, or manage complex caseloads.
-
Experienced OTs: Supervision can prevent burnout, provide a sounding board, and help you reflect on leadership, mentoring, or career shifts.
- Business Owners: The support and guidance you need to ensure you, and your team, are up-to-date on the latest industry practices.
No matter how long you’ve been practising, you’ll always benefit from stepping back, reflecting, and getting perspective.
Finding the Right Fit with Your Supervisor
One of the most overlooked parts of supervision is the relationship. The truth is: you won’t “mesh” with every supervisor, and that’s okay. Thankfully, in Australia, we are blessed to have many incredible OT coaches that can support a variety of different OTs. Each of them will have slightly different specialties and focuses, perhaps paediatrics, geriatrics, mental health, physical therapy and more. But also, each coach will have a different approach to your sessions.
Supervision works best when:
-
You feel comfortable being open and honest
-
The supervisor’s style matches your needs (e.g. more structured vs conversational)
-
There’s mutual respect and understanding of your goals
-
You leave sessions feeling supported and empowered, not judged or deflated
It’s worth taking the time to find someone you connect with — because when the fit is right, supervision becomes less about meeting requirements and more about building a safe, productive space for growth. I believe so strongly in the coach/client relationship, I will always have a call with a potential new client before formalising our supervision program.
What Does a Good Supervision Session Look Like?
While every supervisor has their own style, a session often includes:
-
A check-in: How are things going, both clinically and personally?
-
Case reflection: Talking through a client, family, or team situation.
-
Practical strategies: Tools, frameworks, or evidence-based approaches.
-
Professional development: Identifying areas to grow — whether it’s report writing, regulation strategies, or leadership.
Supervision should feel safe, collaborative, and tailored to what you need.
Getting the Most Out of Supervision
-
Be intentional: Think about what you’d like to bring before the session.
-
Stay open: Honesty makes supervision valuable — it’s a judgment-free zone.
-
Reflect afterwards: Jot down what resonated and what you’d like to try.
-
See it as ongoing support: It’s not just about solving problems — it’s about nurturing your growth and wellbeing as a practitioner.
Professional supervision isn’t just a requirement — it’s a lifeline. It gives us space to reflect, learn, and be supported in a profession that can be both deeply rewarding and emotionally demanding.
And when you find the right supervisor — someone you truly connect with — it becomes one of the most valuable parts of your professional journey.
